Playing Defense is such a cute story!I was expecting sweet and I got it. I love romances like this one. Both characters were likable and relatable. There was no major angst or betrayal.
Chris Winslow is part of the high school hockey team. He plays well and gets along with people. He does enjoy mischief but nothing that could hurt anyone. When he needs help with chemistry and math he agrees to a tutor to avoid getting in trouble with his coach.
Claudia Waring only cares about her grades opening doors to endless possibilities. She is determined to do her best. She knows being a tutor will look good on her applications. She is not crazy about the guy she is going to be tutoring. She believes him to be nothing but a jock.
What I like about the story is that they learned to do things outside their comfort zone without endangering themselves. Claudia tried to make Chris realize his missed potential at school and at playing hockey. She knew he could perform better at both.
Chris helped Claudia learn there was more to life than studying. Chris helped her trust more people and create new friendships. Also, he helped her confront her fear of public speaking. Chris was sweet and understanding. The perfect book boyfriend.
I was not crazy about Claudia's mom. She gave Chris no chance to prove himself. She labeled him and decided he was not worth it. I'm glad Claudia was more open-minded because Chris was super worth it.
I'm super happy I picked this YA romance to read it.

Playing Defense Corrigan Falls Raiders Book 2 eBook Cate Cameron Reviews
I thoroughly there this book. It was funny, sweet and witty. I read it in an evening, I couldn't put it down!
I'm a speed reader and don't write good reviews unless a book resonates with me
Really like the story line of these characters. Good writing style that appeals to young adults and not son young adults.
I read center ice and loved it but this book is nothing compared to that. The characters are annoying and boring. There was no chemistry between the main couple. And there were so many plot holes, SO MANY. And it was just bad writing. Don't read
This is good YA
Chris is a well-developed live-in-the-now guy & Claudia is a well-developed focus-on-the-future gal. The point-of-view jumps between the two, but their voices are different enough that it is clear who is narrating. I kinda wish there was more to the story. I wanted resolution, or something, with her mom, and I'm curious what will happen at the end of the year, or even after New Years, but it is a satisfying read. (I think there is room for a "part 2" for Claudia & Chris)
Bonus points for the lead being a woman of color, and more than 1 gay secondary characters who weren't dating each other (there weren’t 2 “gays” just so they could pair up).
I am curious about her friend Annabelle. If she's a lit gal or a writer gal, but she's so stuck in fantasy she doesn't really have a connection to her feelings...what would force her head out of her books & get her interested in living humans? The series could follow her story could be next… maybe once she gets in a writing program in college and her writing lacks depth/honesty…
Playing Defense is a young adult romance. It’s sweet, innocent and lots of fun. Sixteen year old Claudia was a teen who only had her eyes on her future, until she met one of the most popular guys in school. Hockey player Chris, he was gorgeous, kind, a prankster and interested in her. When Claudia was given the duty of being Chris’s tutor, their quick friendship came out of nowhere. For once in Claudia’s life she was not just looking forward to her future school, she was looking forward on her day and seeing Chris again. The connection happened fast and Chris gave Claudia her first real kiss. It was sweet, it was intense. I loved it. Innocent Claudia wanted more with Chris, but does Chris feel the same?
I really enjoyed this young love for what it is. The sweetness of the story is something I always go gaga over. Chris had my heart, with his funny personality and Claudia with her strong take it charge kinda girl. If you are looking for a sweet and short read this is it.
I read the first book in Cate Cameron's Corrigan Falls Raiders book Center Ice, and enjoyed it so I was pretty stoked to read the second book. I like the way this series is set up because it's more a companion novel that a direct sequel. Although it was cool to see that Tyler and Karen were still together and they play a huge part. Also, I loved the lovable goofball Chris in the first book that I was excited to read a book about his romance.
I love the trope of the slacker and the geek together, so as soon as Claudia and Chris got assigned to each other I couldn't wait for them to get together. Chris is such a lovable goof, and I liked that he gets Claudia to open up. Claudia has actually just been living her life according to books, and honestly I really did not like her friend who follows her but basically ignores her to read books. She was super annoying. The book also uses the female gaze, which I always like to read in book. It's interesting to see the woman lusting after the man.
Claudia's parents kind of annoyed me. Like I got why they were so hard on her, and they really did just want what was best for her, but it was so frustrating that they never once asked her what she wanted. Claudia talked about how she and her mom were super close, but really it seemed like her mom micro-managed every factor of her life. So when Chris comes into the picture it created a lot of drama. It was realistic, but it kind of annoyed me.
I really enjoyed Chris and Claudia's relationship, and I definitely enjoyed it that Chris was so nervous around her. I liked when we get to see dudes in the insecure position in romance books. We seem to read into gender norms that guys should be unfeeling and macho, but that's not the case, so I always enjoy seeing men showing a range of emotions in books.
I definitely liked this one way better than the first book, but it might be because the romance was more of the slow burn. I am enjoying Cate Cameron's series, and this little hockey-obsessed town.
