I read this book, a chapter a night, with my twelve year old grandson. When we were half way done, he took it home with him. After completing THE WORLD'S GREATEST DETECTIVE by Caroline Carlson, he told me that "it was the best detective book he had ever read!" Then I had to wait two months to get my copy back. I cheated by getting a library copy. Now I have leant and recommended the book to every mystery fan I know, of all ages. Carlson's book is now nominated for the prestigious AGATHA mystery award. I have high hopes to meet the author in Bethesda when the award is presented. The clues, red herrings and the derring-do of the characters will keep you turning pages to the end of this fun mystery.

Loved this book - And I’m not a young adult reader! Great character development, mystery and suspense, and it’s full of good humor. A great book for any age! Kept me guessing!
Love, love, LOVE this book! Such fun. Very cleverly written. Full of surprises and heart. It's funny, mysterious, and also touching. Great book for just about anybody!
This is such a good mystery--fun for kids and adults alike. Like Carlson's other books (The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates trilogy), it's a great read-aloud. Kids and their parents will enjoy gathering clues as they go along and guessing which ones might be red herrings (there are lots!). There are more than a few witty nods to detectives such as Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, and Hercule Poirot. And Toby and Ivy are delightful sleuths!
Without fail, Carlson delivers expertly written middle grade books which keep whole families engaged (and often in stitches). I am always eager and excited when I hear she's written another novel for my family to enjoy! This book is no exception.
Such an entertaining story for all ages -- but of course, kids will love Toby and Ivy best. Great twists, interesting setting and characters! Nominated for a Malice Domestic Agatha Award for Children's/Young Adults, which got me interested in reading this. Definitely top-notch for the children's mystery shelf.
The World's Greatest Detective may be written for children, but I really enjoyed it, too, and I am all grown up. It has all the elements of a terrific detective story and the characters are wonderful. Her descriptions of the street and houses are spot on and made me feel like I was part of the neighborhood. I really enjoyed this book and hope she writes another detective novel soon.
